Environment

We invest in efforts to protect Georgia’s natural resources and to connect people to the outdoors.

Mr. Woodruff grew up with a love of the outdoors from hunting and fishing with his grandfather Robert Winship. He restored longleaf pine forests on his hunting reserve in southwest Georgia and helped the State of Georgia acquire Ossabaw Island to protect coastal marsh habitat. In Atlanta, Mr. Woodruff made gifts to turn city blocks into public parks, including downtown’s Woodruff Park

We continue to steward natural resources for future generations and support greenspaces that enhance community well-being. The Jones Center at Ichauway is the centerpiece of our environmental grantmaking, which makes up a modest part of our average grants portfolio (see chart). Giving also focuses on improving parks and trails in metro Atlanta and supporting large-scale conservation projects across Georgia.

We do not fund operating support or school-based environmental education programs. Our giving for neighborhood greenspaces is generally limited to Park Pride’s grantmaking program
